Who is this qualification for?

Young adults 13 to 16 years and anyone who would like to learn about the social,economic and health impacts of alcohol and the importance of the licensed retail sector.

The Certificate in Alcohol Awareness has been developed in response to a Government initiative to raise awareness of issues linked to alcohol consumption by young people.

What are the qualifications key subject areas?
  • the nature of alcohol and strengths of different alcoholic drinks
  • how alcohol affects the body,and the dangers of drinking to much
  • the effects of binge-drinking and alcoholism
  • the risks of irresponsible drinking to sexual health
  • the dangers of drink and drug driving
  • basic licensing law and licensing offences
  • drugs and offensive weapons on licensed premises
  • how the licensed retail sector promotes responsible drinking
  • how the licensed retail sector contributes to the local and national economy
How is the quailification delivered?

The Certificate in Alcohol Awareness is delivered to learners at School or Youth groups and is designed to take 10 guided learning hours with a short 25 question exam paper combining yes /no and multiple choice questions.

The Certificate in Alcohol Awareness can be delivered as part of the National Curriculum and is also available to candidates as a stand alone qualification.

The Certificate in Alcohol Awareness is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and is the first step on the ladder to a wider range of qualifications awarded through the BIIAB

  • BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders

Who is this qualification for?

The Award In Responsible Alcohol Retailing is designed for anyone who works on licensed retail premises and involved with the sale of alcohol including;

  • bar staff
  • waiters/waitresses
  • supermarket cashiers
  • licensed shop cashiers

in any licensed premise including;

  • pubs
  • hotels
  • licensed shops
  • convenience stores
  • entertainment venues
  • leisure parks
  • bars
  • restaurants
  • supermarkets
  • sports and social clubs
  • nightclubs
  • casinos

This qualification provides essential knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of alcohol retailers authorised by a personal license holder to sell alcohol.It will enable those who complete the qualification to act within the law and to support the designated premises supervisor to retail alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises.

  • the nature of alcohol and the effect that it has on the human body
  • the main issues in the Licensing Act 2003 as they relate to alcohol
    retailers and servers
  • Licensing law in relation to the protection of children from harm
  • the social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alchohol
  • how to recognise drunkenness,and an individuals duty not to serve
    drunk customers
  • appropriate strategies that can be adopted to prevent or eliminate
    alcohol-related crime and conflict and the importance of personal
    safety
How is the qualification delivered?

The Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is a one day course which includes a short 25 question multiple-choice exam.Training is supported by the BIIAB ARAR handbook.This handbook is written in an easy-to follow format and contains all the information needed to pass the exam.The BIIAB ARAR is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

Candidates can receive training on site or attend a course at a registered training venue.
